Synopsis: Espionage thriller set during the Cold War. When Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spy in New York, is caught and tried, his lawyer, James Donovan, argues that American values demand that Abel's life be spared. When US military pilot Francis Gary Powers is shot down over Russia and thrown in prison, Donovan is sent to Berlin to negotiate a complicated exchange of Americans for Abel. All his powers of persuasion, character judgment, trust, ingenuity and bluff are called upon as he navigates the treacherous world of burocrats, corruption and espionage in a city torn, like the world, into two mutually mistrustful factions.
